The 8 Best Places to Hire Expert Freelance Writers

You’ve committed to content marketing. You’re excited about the potential. Then you realize†¦ How am I going to write all this content? Combine writing with creating visuals, formatting the blog post, creating a downloadable content upgrade, and promoting the post. That’s a lot of work. By hiring freelance writers, you can take a lot of that work off your plate and focus on marketing the content instead. In this post we’re looking at 8 places where you can hire freelance writers as well as a few tips on what to include in your job ad. The 8 Best Places to Hire Expert Freelance Writers Click To Tweet Social Media LinkedIn Social media can be a good place to start the hunt for freelance writers. Using not only your personal network but only tools like LinkedIn’s Profinder. You can also look for freelance writers in your space by searching for â€Å"freelance writers + [industry]†. For example, here are the results when I type in â€Å"freelance writer + SaaS† Twitter Many freelance writers are also active on Twitter, so you should consider doing a quick search for some writers in your industry. Searching for industry-specific hashtags with â€Å"freelance writer† will help you identify talented writers in your space. Online Freelance Websites The trouble with trying to find writers on social media is that it can take a long time to find someone qualified. This means you’re going to spend time and energy vetting writers that are far below your writing standards. Some freelance writing websites do that work for you by building a network of qualified freelance writers. Constant Content Cue the shameless self-promotion: we think Constant Content is flippin’ great. Joking aside, I truly do think a content writing service can be a marketer’s best friend. That’s because finding, vetting, hiring, and managing writers is tiresome–and Constant Content makes the entire process a lot easier. You can buy exclusive rights to pre-written content, request custom content from our top writers, or send out a job ad to our entire pool of writers and let them come to you. On the Find Writers page, you can see top writers by industry or use keywords to search for writers with specific experience. Upwork Of course, we can’t forget to mention Upwork. They are a massive freelance platform and boast several thousands of active freelancers. Finding and hiring writers is quite simple because you can use categories and other filters to narrow down the results. The drawback here is that Upwork doesn’t vet their freelancers. From their eligibility page: â€Å"with a few exceptions, most everyone over the age of 18 who has an Internet connection can apply to join.† Again, this means you’re going to waste time sifting through low-quality writers. Job Boards The previous 4 places to hire writers mostly focus on outbound hiring. In some cases, it may make sense to also do some inbound hiring. Inbound hiring simply refers to putting out a job ad and letting writers apply to the project. Indeed Indeed is one of the largest online job boards. While it traditionally focuses on permanent hiring there is also a place for remote and freelance hiring. Rather than just posting a job ad, consider searching for writers as well. There close to 18,000 resumes uploaded to the site with the keyword â€Å"freelance writer†. More Places to Find Writers to Hire While those are the conventional place to hire freelance writers, they aren’t the only places to find writers. Large publications Look at who is writing for the biggest publications in your industry. Many top freelancers use these publications to gain credibility and exposure. If you’re going to attempt this strategy, simply visit the publication and find the author bio on a popular article. Here is an example from Forbes. By click through to the author bio, you can get some additional info about the author and some contact info. Social trending tools In a similar, but different approach, try using social trending tools to find writers behind the most popular articles on a topic. For example, tools like Buzz Sumo let you search for the most popular articles for a certain term. Here is a screenshot showing the top articles in the past year for the term â€Å"content marketing†. What to Include Your Job Ad In order to attract quality writers, you need to have a quality job ad. Type Why is it important to define the type of content needed? Because copywriting isn’t content writing. Copywriting isn't content writing. Click To Tweet Writers can be skilled in one area and struggle in another so it’s important to clarify the type of content right up front. At Constant Content, we have a multiple different services to help you find the right writer for the right content, including a copywriting service, blog writing service, product description writing service, and more. Free Actionable Bonus: Looking to outsource your content writing? Get the complete guide to finding, vetting, and hiring freelance writers Topic Clearly, a good job ad should outline the topics a writer would be covering. Price It’s no secret that you pay for quality, and most skilled writers won’t give a job advertisement a second look if they don’t see a budget listed. Timeline Style, experience, and pricing are moot if a writer doesn’t have the availability to turn around an article within your timeline. Writing Job Ad Template XYZ corp produces novelty beer cozies. We would like to bring on 2-3 writers to produce articles aimed at increasing brand awareness as well as driving readers to our product pages. The achievements of the rules- essays

The achievements of the rules- essays With the end of the Second World War , the United States wanted to give an early boost to trade liberalization and to begin to correct the legacy of protectionist measures which remained in place from the early 1930s. The combined package of trade rules and tariff concessions became known as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), first signed in 1947 and entered into force in January 1948. Drawn up by twenty-three countries, the agreement was designed to provide an international forum that encouraged free trade between member states by regulating and reducing tariffs on traded goods and by providing a common mechanism for resolving trade disputes. As a matter of course, the GATT organised a set of rounds, most of them devoted to continuing the process of reducing tariffs and providing rules to govern international trade. The Kennedy Round in the mid-sixties brought about a GATT Anti-Dumping Agreement and a section on development. The Tokyo Round during the 1970s was the first major attempt to tackle trade barriers that do not take the form of tariffs and to improve the system. The eighth, the Uruguay Round (1986-94), was the last and most extensive of all. It led to the creation of a legal institution, the World Trade Organization (WTO), in order to replace the provisional GATT, and a new set of agreements. In order to assess the achievements of the rules-based system of world trade over the past years, this essay will first deal with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and its weaknesses, then with the GATT rounds and its both positive and negative achievements, and finally focuse on the changing international environment that occurred since the last decade. As highlighted by N. Grimwade (2000, pp.323), the main pillar of the GATT system was the principle of non-discrimination, which underlie two principles : the Most Favoured Nation (MNF) treatment clause and the system of national treatment. The...

How to Implement a Marketing Workflow Management Process in 7 Steps

How to Implement a Marketing Workflow Management Process in 7 Steps The best marketing teams succeed with strong workflow management processes. Defined as a preset order of operations for getting stuff done, they’re essential for getting work right the first time, every time. Workflow management is also indispensable for building efficiencies into processes, so you can spend more time doing meaningful work, and less time feeling frustrated due to procedural roadblocks. In short, they allow you to plan your work, and work your plan. If you don’t have solid workflows in place, you’ve probably experienced the following problems: Disjointed workflows. No one knows who does what, or in which order. Communication breakdowns. And not like the Led Zeppelin song, either. Missed deadlines. Lack of process leads to inefficiency. In turn, that leads to nothing getting done on time. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. That’s just a short list of potential issues you could face, too. How to Implement an Effective Marketing Workflow Management Process in 7 Simple Steps byDownload Your Marketing Workflow Management Template Bundle Fixing broken marketing processes isnt always easy. Having the right tools helps though, so this post includes the following free resources: Marketing Project Management Template (Word): Plan the efficient processes that youll execute. Marketing Project Checklist Template (Excel): Ensure every project and campaign gets completed with no missed steps. Marketing Calendar Template (Excel): Map out deadlines and make projects visible across your entire department. Together, this trio of templates will help you get started planning and managing processes that work. Download them below before continuing.Table of Contents: What is a Workflow? Why You Should Plan Marketing Workflows What Are Popular Workflow Management Tools For Marketers? A lot of places make workflows sound unnecessarily complicated. Benjamin Brandall summed it up well on the Process Street blog: Workflows are the way people get work done, and can be illustrated as series of steps that need to be completed sequentially in a diagram or checklist. This video from PNM Soft offers a further explanation: Workflows are often visualized using charts or diagrams. They can also be as simple as checklists outlining the steps required to complete a task. Here’s an example of a typical content marketing workflow courtesy of Content Marketing Institute: Here’s what a workflow might look like as a checklist: Do This With : You can build workflow checklists (called Task Templates) in , the only marketing suite that helps you organize all of your marketing in one place. See how they work. Why Bother Planning Marketing Workflows? There’s no sense investing time in something that won’t produce a benefit. So, what’s the real benefit to planning out workflows and sticking to them? Here are seven. 1. Increased Efficiency Means Getting More Done If you’re like most marketers, you have too much to do, and not enough time to get it done. Mile-long to-do lists come with the territory. But, sometimes, that work is more achievable than it seems. While it’s easy to blame being overworked for lack of productivity, sometimes the real culprit is an inefficient workflow. By planning out workflows strategically, you can get more done in less time. By planning out workflows strategically, you can get more done in less time.2. They Make Responsibilities Clear to All Team Members How often have you heard someone say, â€Å"I didn’t know I was supposed to get that done†? Or, how often have you said that out loud yourself? It’s time to put a permanent stop to â€Å"not-my-jobism†. When workflows are clearly mapped out, there’s no ambiguity around who is responsible for which tasks and deadlines. You execute or you don’t. The result? Projects get done right the first time with more consistency. When workflows are clearly mapped out, projects get done right the first time with more consistency.3. Reducing the Need for Hand-Holding and Oversight This one is tied into point number two above. When people don’t quite know what to do, they’ll lean on management for guidance. There’s nothing wrong with that, unless they lean a little too hard, to the extent of having no initiative of their own. Workflows make it clear what team members are responsible for, so they don’t have to wonder whether they’re working on the right things. #Marketing workflows make it clear what people are responsible for.4. Building Consistency in Execution Consistency is key to marketing success. It’s a fundamental building block for constructing and executing processes that drive 10X results. But, if you don’t have a consistent set of steps to follow for every type of project, tasks are liable to fall through the cracks. Sometimes, the negative effects are small like a minor editing step gets missed. Other times, the consequences can be dramatically more significant, like a webinar not getting recorded (good luck publishing that recap video †¦ without the video). Sometimes things happen and can’t be prevented. That’s life. But, marketers should always be doing as much as possible to prevent major mishaps. #Marketers should always be doing as much as possible to prevent major mishaps.5. Enables Visibility Across Projects and Teams There’s a lot of value in teams being able to see what other teams or coworkers are doing. It helps achieve the following results: Managers can see what their staff is working on. Everyone can see the completion status of each project. Transparency improves communication. When workflows are mapped out and projects are placed onto a shared calendar, everyone stays in the loop and holds one another accountable. Agile marketing is a great way to increase visibility into your team's workload.   One of key ways to do this is via the daily stand-up. This meeting takes place during the first 15 mins of every work day. To start you gather every member of your team and ask them three questions. What did you do yesterday? What will you do today? What roadblock are you experiencing?   Daily stand-up meetings help managers stay up-to-date about everything their team is working on, and help facilitate better collaboration and communication amongst team members. has a feature called the Team Management Dashboard that is basically a daily stand-up visualized before your very eyes. You can see exactly what everyone on your team is working on for the day, and reshuffle tasks as needed. It happens. When they do, it’s important to have a retrospective and identify where the breakdown happened, so it doesn’t happen again. When workflows are well-documented, it’s easier to diagnose exactly where issues arise. When workflows are well-documented, it’s easier to diagnose exactly where issues arise.7. Managers Can Get Out of the Weeds Managers often get too involved in their team member’s work because they don’t trust they’ll get everything done. This is often the result of team members not knowing exactly what they should be doing. It’s a vicious and endless loop. Documenting workflows removes ambiguity so teams are empowered to just get their work done. That frees up manager’s time and headspace to focus on more important things. Everyone wins. What Are Popular Workflow Management Tools for Marketers? There are tons of different software options available, although most of them are not made specifically for marketers. Here are some common choices: Trello Asana Wrike Basecamp DID YOU KNOW: Trello, Asana, Wrike, and Basecamp integrate with using Zapier? See how all your project management tools can work together. Step 1. Determine How Your Team Will Communicate Strong team communication requires the right tools. Before getting too far along, assess whether you currently have the best technology to build collaborative workflows. Once you have a tool selected, you might also have other means of communication too, like email or a chat app. So, how do you enforce team members using the right communication tools for the right things? For internal communication and casual conversation, Slack and Stride are great. Honestly, so is good, old-fashioned walking across the office to talk to someone face-to-face. But, when it comes to project-based communication, it’s best to keep everything organized in one place. There’s nothing worse than forgetting a conversation you had last week or losing notes down an email inbox rabbit hole. solves this by building Discussion Threads into projects. This way, you can keep all team correspondence together, passing notes, trading files, and more, all in one place. Create a project on your calendar: Then, click the Contributors icon on the right: Add team members who will be working on this project: Next, use Discussion Threads to converse and collaborate: Step 2: Onboard the Team to Your Tool If you’re selecting a new tool, making sure everyone knows how to use it well is crucial. Most software providers offer training and in-app onboarding assistance. If they don’t, use something else. Even with vendor-provided training and onboarding, it’s also often worthwhile to host your own training sessions. To do this: Find a time on your company’s calendar that works for everyone who will use the tool. Include a short description in the meeting invite explaining what this tool will help the team achieve. Build a short slide presentation outlining how to use the tool. Make yourself available for questions. Taking the time to instruct the team on how to use the new tool, while also communicating why the tool is even necessary, can go a long way toward ensuring everyone is successful. Recommended Reading: Shorten the Learning Curve For Onboarding Your Team Onto (With Reals) Step 3: Define Everyone’s Responsibilities Next, determine each team member’s responsibilities for each type of project you execute regularly. For a content marketing team, this could include: Creating blog posts. Producing videos. Hosting webinars. Delivering email newsletters. Writing website copy. Each of these projects likely involves multiple team members: Writers to craft copy and content. Designers to create visual elements. Marketing specialists to host webinars. Analysts to measure performance and extract insights from data. Project managers to keep everyone on track. So, who does what, exactly? Sometimes, this answer will be obvious. In other cases, it may be less clear. Stick with one task per person to avoid duplication of effort. Start mapping out tasks logically: Writer Content Research Writing Content and Copy Analyzing Copy PerformanceDesigner Creating Blog Graphics Designing Website Graphics Producing Slide DecksStrategist Generating Ideas Directing Strategy Analyzing ResultsProject Manager Assigning Tasks Managing Client Communication Enforcing DeadlinesSEO Keyword Research On-Page Optimization Backlink OutreachThese are some (very) basic examples. Step 4: Map Out Task Checklists This is where you’ll answer the question posed above in more granular detail. For each project, list the following information: The tasks required to complete the project. Who is responsible for getting it done. How long each step should take. For example, here’s what this might look like for a blog post: Generate Ideas: Strategist - Due 21 Days Before Publish Map Ideas to Content Calendar: Strategist - Due 20 Days Before Publish Keyword Research: SEO Specialist - Due 18 Days Before Publish Write Outline: Writer - Due 17 Days Before Publish Finish Draft: Writer - Due 14 Days Before Publish Edit Draft: Manager/Editor - Due 12 Days Before Publish Create Graphics: Designer - 10 Days Before Publish Schedule Social Promotion: Writer/Social Strategist - 8 Days Before Publish Schedule Post to Publish: Editor - 7 Days Before Publish If this workflow is followed consistently, every blog post will be ready to publish a week in advance at a minimum. This allows room to work ahead, rather than scrambling to meet deadlines at the last minute. In , checklists can be built and reused indefinitely using Task Templates. Create a project on your calendar. Then, add each step to your checklist (Task Template): Next, determine who performs each step: Assign deadlines to each task: Here's what the completed template looks like: Now, each time an item is checked off, the completion percentage will increase: How Long Should Tasks Take? This is a good question, but one without an easy answer. The best way to determine how long things take is to track time. Every time a team member works on a task, have them use Toggl to track their time. It's a simple time-tracking app that makes it easy to quantify how long you're spending doing a given thing: Then, track your average completion time for that type of task (the total number of times the task was completed, divided by the sum of time spent on those tasks overall). Consider using a spreadsheet to track your time, adding the following fields pictured below: Step 5: Plan Your Marketing Calendar Use a marketing calendar to keep projects and campaigns organized. Calendars allow you to: Set and manage deadlines. View which projects are coming up. See what other team members are working on. Prioritize work based on how soon which projects need to be completed. Collaborate with your team in one place. Marketing calendars are often built using spreadsheets (like the free Excel template included in this post). A better option, however, is to use purpose-built software. Apps like help teams beat makeshift marketing (using non-marketing tools for marketing tasks) with a solution built for your specific needs. Recommended Reading: Marketing Calendar By : A Centralized View For All Your Marketing Efforts Mapping Projects and Campaigns to Every marketing task, project, and campaign your team works on can be organized on a marketing calendar like . As you add more pieces to the calendar, it'll start to look something like this: Now, if you'd like to make it easier to separate items visually, Color Labels make it easy to color-code projects: If you'd prefer to see your upcoming work in a list, rather than a traditional calendar view, click List View: You'll now see all the items on your calendar in a list: Step 6: Plan Your Execution and Collaboration Next, develop a plan for how the project will be executed. This includes: Determining the team members who will be on the project.   Defining which tools the team will use. Executing the project. Here’s how a blog post could be created using . First, make sure WordPress, your social networks, and email service provider are connected: Write your blog content using Google Docs, Evernote, ’s built-in text editor, or directly in WordPress: As you work through the post, share notes with your team using Discussion Threads. You can also manage version control if you choose to write content using Microsoft Word (or another word processor), attaching and exchanging files: Now, it's possible you'll need to create additional promotional content for social media and email. Add a Social Campaign and create social media promotion: You can now add and schedule social media posts: Next, if you’ll be promoting this blog post with email, add an email campaign on the same day: That’s your entire content creation workflow, managed and automated with . You can build and manage workflows for all other content and projects you execute as well. Step 7: Measure Team Performance How do you know your workflows are effective? By measuring your team’s output and comparing productivity levels to where they were before. ’s Team Performance Reports make it simple to quantify productivity. Monster and environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Monster and environment - Essay Example This paper is title ‘monster and environment; Environmental Rhetoric’ and it offers three environmental critiques. According to Cahn and O’Brien (131), the kind of thinking and talking that people have about the environment matters. Such thoughts and words reveal what the people value and shape their actions towards the environment. The emergence of environmental criticism was not architecture of environmental writers rather it has been due to a slow evolution of thought on physical world and nature. There have been critiques of the humans’ relationship with nature and environment. The emergence of the industrial world extended the problem of environment and human relationship. The problem was of identifying the ideal equilibrium between preserving and controlling the nature. This problem increases with an increase of human knowledge on the physical world (Cahn and O’Brien, 131). Even though there has been an extended systematic concern for the environment, the world is yet to see a potentially good solution to environmental problems including environmental rhetoric. Meister and Phyllis (01) argue that nature is a symbol in the popular human culture. The popular human culture teaches the emphasis of the ‘use value’ of nature. Humans simply learn both unconsciously and consciously from the popular culture and practice of consuming nature (Meister and Phyllis 01). However, contrary to Meister and Phyllis’s (02), while popular culture unquestionably helps humans understand many faces of nature, understanding the environmental face of nature has proven very difficult. Or perhaps, humans understand environment but ignore its requirements. Often, popular culture redefines, manipulates and modifies thy symbol of nature in the life of human beings hence distorting the value and understanding of the environment. Therefore, the notion that if a capitalistic society subjects nature

National Police Force Service Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

National Police Force Service - Essay Example They carry out different activities from prevention and investigation of crimes happening in the different localities mentioned above to enforcing laws, maintaining peace and order and provision of support of operation to the rest of the law enforcement agencies which need it. These police units also operate not only within their nation’s borders but abroad as well and link up with other law enforcement agencies. The war on drugs has been on the increase for quite a while now and despite all the efforts put by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), they have not yet been able to stop the drugs from entering he US borders and infiltrating the market all over the nation. Drug trafficking has become a menace in the country and dire measures need to be enforced if it is to be curbed once and for all. The same case is similar for terrorism cases. Since the 9/11 bombing in New York, all law enforcement agencies have been on the look-out for terrorists and terrorism activities. What is however evident is that the terrorists live within the neighborhood like normal citizens or are assisted by individuals who are inhabitants of the US. The only way to stop them is to identify them from their home and operational locations and this is possible through intense surveillance as well as regular patrols in neighborhoods. All this demands too much time and man power which these agencies from the Department of Homeland Security to the FBI and even CIA cannot offer.

Being on Time Essay Example for Free

Being on Time Essay Time: It is the universes theoretical constant that governs, sometimes with an iron fist, the everyday lives of humans. Time has many different measurements. There are stellar measurements, such as the phases of the moon or the rotation of the Earth around our Sun. There are extremely long measurements of time, like the geological epoch that can span for tens of millions of years, and there are very small measurements such as planck time, a unit commonly used to measure events in quantum mechanics and is so small that a single unit of planck time is the equivalent of 10-43 seconds. People have always measured time in one form or another. Beginning with our ancestors, who began to measure the phases of the moon almost 30,000 years ago, to the Egyptians who began to measure time using shadows cast by large Obelisks, effectively being the very first sundials. Today, we use a common standard of time in our day-to-day lives. Sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day, three hundred sixty-five days in a solar year; but time has always been used to measure and record important events. This has never been more evident as it has been in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In this era of human history, punctuality is one of the key elements of our workforce, and particularly in the military. In our world, being on-time carries more with it than just a smooth operation of events. Here, being at the right place at the right time can mean the difference between life and death. As members of the United States Army, we have made a commitment to obey our unique laws and regulations, of which precision and conscionable timing is reflected. In our Uniform Code of Military Justice, timeliness is addressed under our Punitive Articles. Chapter 10, Article 86: ABSENCE WITHOUT LEAVE Any member of the armed forces who, without authority– (1) fails to go to his appointed place of duty at the time prescribed; (2) goes from that place; or (3) absents himself or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty at which he is required to be at the time prescribed; shall be punished as a court-martial may direct. With this being said it is very important for an individual to be at his/her appointed place of duty at least 15 minutes prior to the time stated. Every soldier knows the military motto â€Å"If you are 15 minutes early you are on time; if you are on time you are late! † This is something that was drilled into us during Basic Training and AIT. I understand the punishment I have been given is not to humiliate me, but make sure I adhere to the military standard at all times. I am an epitome of the soldier’s creed and I wear my uniform proudly. All though I am not perfect I strive for perfection every waking moment of everyday. I am currently paying for my actions in a previous incident and by completing the task I was given I hope to prove that I am not a loss; but someone that can be counted on when needed. I will from this point and all those times in the future; make sure I am at my appointed place of duty. If for any reason I am not able to make it on time, I will be sure to contact my chain of command and let them know why and bring evidence of the incident if instructed.

Key Functions of Education from a Functionalist Perspective

What are the key functions of education from a Functionalist Perspective? Ever since the education system was invented, there have been a lot of ideas and criticisms of how it should work. The most famous sociological groups, functionalists and Marxists, were part of this and still are today. They both think that their views are best for society. Talcott Parsons believes that the education system has three main functions. Firstly it socializes young people into key cultural values such as equality of opportunity, competition and religious morality.Education is said by functionalists (especially Durkheim) to emphasize moral responsibilities in society that people should have towards each other. If these norms were not passed down through generations then there would be a tendency for individualism (where people believe that they are more important than social groups). Citizenship and religious education were introduced as compulsory subjects in schools to see that young people did thi ngs with thought for the society. The second function is to do with the skills that education teaches children, from literacy and numeracy to more job-specific skills.Occupational jobs are becoming more specialized and this in turn will lead to more years in education. The final function of education, according to functionalists is the allocating of roles of young people in society. Examinations and qualifications are said to allocate people for their most suited job. The equality of opportunity took place and so higher talented people are given the most functionally important jobs for the society. Parsons was criticized as he failed to consider that the values transmitted by the educational system may be those of a ruling minority rather than society as a whole.Like parsons, functionalists Davis and Moore saw education as a means of selecting or shifting people for different levels of the jobs market and ensuring that the most talented and qualified individuals are allocated to the most important jobs with high rewards. Society is therefore meritocracy in which people are rewarded for intelligence, ability and effort. They where criticized because the relationship between academic credentials and occupational reward is not close. Income is only weakly linked to educational attainment. There is doubt about the proposition that the educational system grades people in terms of ability. It has been argued that intelligence is so difficult to pin down that school achievement can never equal ‘intelligence’. While Marxists do share many ideas of functionalists e. g. the fact that education prepares us for out acceptance of the values of society they also see how the education system is alienating children. Functionalists, on the other hand, seem unable to see this and believe that the education system can only do well to children by teaching them norms and values. Functionalists where criticized because as Marxists say, education system is not meritocrat ic as there are the influence of class, ethnicity and gender.

Character and his relationships Essay

Describe Pip’s encounters with Miss Havisham and Estella, and show how the meetings affect his character and his relationships. Puneet Khandelwal At the start of the novel, Pip is an innocent boy who has been brought up to respect his elders and betters. He is a kind-hearted child as is seen in the episode in which he brings the convict the file and the food. He is also rather gullible and really believes that a terrible man will tear his liver out while he sleeps unless he does as he has been told. This gullibility can be seen again when he visits Miss Havisham’s house, for the first time, and is taken in by the charms of Estella. Pip first meets Miss Havisham when he goes to Satis House, to play. He sees her sitting in the candle lit room in her wedding dress and jewelry, sitting next to her dressing table. His first impression of her was that â€Å"she was the strangest lady I have ever seen, or shall ever see. † He is shocked by what he sees and thinks of her as a â€Å"ghastly waxwork. † He was â€Å"half afraid† and in an â€Å"uncomfortable state,† during this meeting. Pip is told to play, by Miss Havisham, but Pip finds this rather difficult in the gloomy surroundings. Estella is sent for to play with Pip. Estella plays a game of cards with Pip, and during this she humiliates him. Estella insults Pip by calling him â€Å"a boy† when in actual fact they are both the same ages. Estella does this time and time again and Pip felt very stupid and clumsy after he dropped the cards while dealing them. While playing at cards, she comments on Pip being â€Å"common† and that he â€Å"calls Knaves, Jacks, this boy. † Pip feels very nervous after this humiliation. Pip meets both Miss Havisham and Estella, again, six days later when he is told to explore the grounds of Satis House. Pip feels himself inferior of the lower status because Estella orders him, â€Å"you are to stand there, boy, till you are wanted. † Then Estella makes him say that she is â€Å"very pretty† and then she asks him if she is insulting but suddenly slaps him around the face and calls him a â€Å"little coarse monster,† which adds further insult to Pip. She then calls him â€Å"a boy† again in front of the other people who are also in the room. By this time Pip can no longer stand up for himself. After a few years, when Pip is a little older, he is apprenticed to Joe. Pip’s sister and Joe’s wife, Mrs. Joe, is attacked by an unknown person, and so due to her disability, Biddy joins the household to help out. He visits Miss Havisham as usual but on one of these visits he finds that Estella has gone abroad to be educated. Pip is upset at this news because he started to like Estella quite a lot but he also thinks that Biddy is growing up into a â€Å"rather attractive woman,† and is quite fond of her. When he is told, by Jaggers, that Pip has inherited a â€Å"handsome property,† Pip immediately thinks that the â€Å"handsome property† is Satis House. He is also told that he must begin his education in London right away. Pip’s attitude to Joe and Biddy completely changes now and he begins to think himself as being a gentleman, something that he is not. He begins to speak highly of himself and talks down at Joe and Biddy. He is insulting to Biddy because he says; â€Å"you are envious, Biddy, and grudging. You are dissatisfied on account of my rise in fortune and can’t help showing it†¦ † Biddy takes as a huge insult. He is rude to Biddy because he compares her to Estella. He also talks down to Joe, â€Å"It’s a pity now, Joe,† said I, † that you did not get a little more when we had our lessons here; isn’t it? † He doesn’t approve of other people’s manners, especially Joe. He talks to Biddy about Joe when he says, â€Å"but he is rather backward in some things. For instance, Biddy, in his learning and his manners,† and has clearly been influenced by Estella. He has become ashamed of Joe and no longer wants to talk to him. He thinks that Joe and Biddy are just commoners and he sees himself as a gentleman. He has become rather bid headed. Now that he has got some of the money, it starts to go to his head and he sees himself as a person with a higher status than the people of the village. He is, in a way, desperate to be rich. The scene in Mr. Trabb’s tailor shop shows Pip having the measurements for a new suit being taken. In the shop, Pip boasts his new status by saying, â€Å"I wish to pay for them†¦ with ready money,† and gets a few coins and shakes them in his hand. He also orders Mr. Trabb’s boy around even though they were previously equal. He begins to despise the village, in which he has stayed all his life, and now he just wants to get away from it all. Everything that he used to admire he now despises, such as Joe, the Forge, his upbringing, his apprenticeship and where he lives. He only has one thing on his mind, and that is to be rich. However, he does become a little unhappy because he has seen the upper lass lifestyle and he doesn’t find it as exciting and he can’t do the things that he used to do, like play in the streets. He doesn’t have any friends and now he becomes even lonelier. But he prepared to give all this up, as he is desperate to win Estella and desperate to obtain all the money. He doesn’t see that some people are trying to take advantage of his new wealth, such as Mr. Pumblechook. Pip is invited over for dinner by Mr. Pumblechook, who gives him the best wine and the best meat to eat and at the end he asks Pip if he would like to invest some of his money in Mr. Pumblechook’s corn business. Mr. Pumblechook never ever used to be this nice to Pip, when he was a commoner, but now that Pip has a lot of money, Mr. Pumblechook treats Pip just like the upper class. So overall Pip went from being just a normal, common boy who loved Joe, and his own sister, and was respectful of everyone that was elder than him and turned into someone who didn’t care about anyone else besides those of the upper class. He became disrespectful, snobbish, very insulting and bid headed.

Blade Runner And Fifth Element Cityscapes Film Studies Essay

Blade Runner And Fifth Element Cityscapes Film Studies Essay Blade runner greets the viewer with a fascinating opening scene where the camera hovers over a vast industrial mega polis called Hades. The year is 2020 and overpopulated Hades is trying to reinforce itself. The place is filled with corroded skyscrapers which shoot flame and gases into the environment creating a sense of hazy and polluted atmosphere. Also, in this shot and in subsequent shots flying cars, called spinners, are seen moving around the cityscape. The entire Hades cityscape was a forced perspective miniature set with larger miniature elements in the foreground which get smaller and smaller as we approach the horizon. Special photographic effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull and his crew constructed the whole set on a plywood table which was about 20 feet wide at the back and 5 feet wide in the front. The actual horizon on the screen is just 15 feet away from the camera. They designed the table according the focal length of the camera, which provided them the base in accor dance to field of view of the camera. This sort of careful planning enabled them to build the miniatures just inside the field of view without wasting valuable production time and money. Chief model maker Mark Stetson relied primarily on etched brass cutouts as elements to create buildings in the shot. But because these cutouts were two-dimensional, they had to stack a number of them together and stagger them across randomly to create depth in the whole shot. states that by using this technique Trumbull was soon posed with a problem: â€Å"But as we got into putting the thing together, we realized quickly that the etched metal stuff would have given away the trick if we’d use it too close to the foreground.† They overcame this by building foam cast models and put them in the foreground. Those models were highly detailed and separately mounted using C-Stands. They were positioned carefully so that the camera could fly right in between creating depth. Another hurdle was creating the atmospherics in the cityscape. Director Ridley Scott wanted smoke and haze in the distant background to add to the drama of the whole scene. Douglas Trumbull created this effect using studio fans and smoke detectors. He first contained the set using black cloth all around it and set up the smoke detectors to trigger the fans. So when they fed smoke into the contained set, fans powered up and pushed the smoke around creating a natural progression of smoke in the environment. Describing his perception of the Hades cityscape, Mark Stetson states: â€Å"I just had this scheme, I just wanted to do it as a series of silhouette and smoke. I wanted the smoke to really be the light and the light to light it up. Everything about that miniature had to be lights.† The way light was used in this shot to create volumetric effects and reflections played a major role making it look real and credible. About 20,000 fiber optic cables (about 7 miles long) were used to light the H ades cityscape. The light cables were threaded up from beneath the plexi glass, on which the brass etched cutouts were mounted. They also mixed and experimented with a lot of interactive lights like axial, blinking, etc which created variety and helped improve the overall aesthetics of the shot.

Hip Hop and Rap Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Hip Hop and Rap - Essay Example Through the history of the hip hop movement, there have been several significant figures contributed to its development. The origin of hip hop movement may be traced back to the early 1970s when rap was introduced at block parties in New York City as a specific genre, and DJs started cutting off the beating breaks of funk, soul, and disco songs and expanding them. MCs began to talk between songs, joking and normally interacting with the audience in order to introduce the DJs and to invigorate the crowd. Thus, the new genre began to attract audience and became commercially successful. The American funk group the Sugarhill Gang, through its "Rapper's Delight," made a remarkable contribution to the popularity of hip hop music, and many critics consider this as the earliest hip hop single. This hip hop group, credited with the first ever gold single, ensured the commercial feasibility of the genre, which resulted in the wide-ranging popularity of the rap music.
